In this era of prepackaged superstars,
of pale imitations of country music being pushed onto the public
by faceless media giants, the music of Wylie & The Wild West is
a beacon of truth and honest beauty. As one critic says, “Wylie
Gustafson is the coolest cowpoke around. Forget everything you
hate about modern country, this guy is old-school cool without
being a tired period piece.”
Singer,
songwriter, rancher, horseman, and the original, world-famous
Yahoo!® yodeler, Wylie Gustafson leads the musical outfit known
as The Wild West. The first incarnation of the group formed in
1989, getting its start on Ronnie Mack's Barn Dance
at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. Since then, Wylie & The
Wild West have played thousands of gigs, delighting audiences
around the world with their unique brand of good-time cowboy
music. They've performed at the National Cowboy Poetry
Gathering, The National Folk Festival,
Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, on
A Prairie Home
Companion, and have appeared more than 50 times on the
Grand Ole Opry.
Add to that an appearance by Wylie on Late Night with
Conan O'Brien,
with Wylie teaching Conan to yodel.
Whether
playing for a crowd of 50 or 5,000, Wylie's goal is always the
same: "To win a crowd with good music and make 'em feel like
they got their money’s worth." Looking back over two decades
with The Wild West, he says, "My idea about playing live music
has pretty much been the same since I started playing in high
school dance bands in the mid-70s:
be an
entertainer. It all started
as I watched Chuck Berry on T.V. one night as he duck-walked,
strutted, kicked, and grooved across the stage while never
missing a beat. Now that was entertainment!"

Introducing
Unwired |

Wylie
& The Wild West's latest CD was recorded during a
live concert at the Warehouse Theatre in Colorado
Springs, Colo. This project is Wylie & The Wild West at
their best, featuring the rock-solid band that has
toured the world with Wylie: Ray Doyle on guitar,
baritone & mando-guitar; Scot Wilburn on guitar,
straight steel & fiddle; Rick Bryceson on drums.
This new album is characteristic of
Wylie & The Wild West’s sometimes rollicking, sometimes
graceful, always entertaining live performance.
"A little jump-and-kick with a touch
of mellow, down easy. We made a point of including a
good jag of our acoustic material so I thought
Unwired would be an appropriate title," says Wylie.
"We always have these magical nights at the Warehouse,
so we thought we’d try to capture one on tape."
The crowd and band come together one
more time for a spectacular summer evening of great
tunes and good vibes at the intimate venue.
"Wylie makes his songs breathe in the moment - no mere
museum piece or nostalgia trip," states Itunes Review.
Unwired proves the point.
This collection of songs is a must
for the avid Wylie-head or the newbe fan who want a good
cross section of the music that has made the band
popular across the nation.

What
folks are saying about Unwired
Here is one of two so-called
"unplugged" CDs received in the same mailing from
Western Jubilee Recording in Colorado Springs. One was
Michael Martin Murphey's and the other was a new live
recording from Wylie & The Wild West entitled
"Unwired!" And in this case the term has two
different meanings, if not a third!
We certainly don't want to give anyone the impression
that Wylie and crew have totally forsaken their
customary beat-driven spizz. It's just that on this one
the carbonation is applied judiciously. Wylie's
sensitive and expressive takes of classics such as
"Goodbye Old Paint," "Cowpoke," "Cattle Call" and
"America The Beautiful" share the stage with some of his
and Paul Zarzyski's rambunctious collaborations such as
"Rodeo To The Bone," "Double Wild" and "Ain't No Life
After Rodeo." Intermixed are Wylie ballads that include
"Ridin' The High Line," "I Get High," and "Where Horses
Are Heroes." His and Joel Nelson's "Equus Caballus" is
here, and to make sure you're paying attention...so are
Buddy Holly's "Everyday" and the trucker fave "Girl On
The Billboard."
For those who got pelted with rock from their last CD,
this one from Wylie & The Wild West is toned down but
hardly dead!

Wylie & Conan O'Brien
No kidding! On
April Fools Day 2008,
Wylie appeared
on Late Night with Conan O'Brien promoting his book,
How to Yodel: Lessons to Tickle Your Tonsils. Conan joined
Wylie in a rockin' rendition of the band's top-selling iTunes
title "Yodel Boogie." The show's official blog described the
6-minute chapter as "the highlight of the day."
Wylie gave Conan high marks for bravery in
accepting the challenge of learning to yodel in front of 2.5
million viewers, and for his abilities in carrying it off
successfully. "We only had about five minutes to rehearse
earlier in the day. "Conan was a superb host, especially off
camera," Wylie said. "His crew was first class through and
through."
